High School Scholarship
I am a mountain girl who grew up in a family that was not wealthy. For as long as I can remember, I saw my parents working hard so I could study in secondary school, which has increasing costs. I wanted to ease my parents' burden — on weekends I went to pick chili and tomatoes for hire, the same work my mother does. After the day's labor I came home to study with friends.
I want to complete the Science-Mathematics track in high school so I can enter university in the health field (nursing) — so I can return to work near home, care for my parents, and treat others. I do not want to see other people suffer illness the way my mother has.
I started working at age 11, helping my mother make snacks to sell at school. At 13 I picked chili and planted coffee seeds for hire on weekends. At 15 I had saved enough from working to invest in selling fried fish balls during school breaks. Currently at 16 I still sell fried fish balls and also grow and sell kitchen garden vegetables.
I am a student council member. Every Friday after school my council group goes to develop the community — collecting garbage, sweeping leaves from the roads, cleaning the temple, and washing temple bathrooms. My family practices Buddhism and every Buddhist holy day I go to the temple to make merit, meditate, and chant with my parents.
I want to complete my degree so I can have a good career to support my parents — because I do not want to see my parents working hard any longer. I want to earn money to pay for my mother's medical treatment and to make my family proud of me.
